Why vocabulary

Vocabulary: Words Learned in Context

New words met in the story, worked out from the scene, then used in your child's own sentences.

Your child listens, reads, speaks and writes about the same story, all as one experience.

Words in Context

Example: meeting “reluctant” in the story, working out what it means from the scene, then using it in their own sentence.

New Words From the Story

Meeting new words in the story and using them in a sentence.

Word Parts

Working out new words from their parts and checking them in a dictionary.

Figurative Language

Working out what a writer means when the words don't mean exactly what they say.

How a new word sticks

Cue, Don't Tell

Our coaches don't hand over the answer. They ask the right question at the right time, so your child works it out and the learning sticks. Here's what that can sound like.

“The story says she hovered at the classroom door. What do you picture her doing?”

Coach asks instead of explaining the word.

“Standing there… not sure if she should go in?”

Child works out the meaning from the scene.

“What in the story tells you she wasn't sure?”

Coach cues your child to find the evidence.

“It's her first day at a new school. She hovered because she was nervous to walk in.”

Child explains, and uses the new word.
What your child reads

Three Terms. One Coach. A Showcase Every Term.

Stories in Term 1, true texts in Term 2, opinions and arguments in Term 3.

Term 1 · Storytelling

Telling a story well: your child reads a story closely, then retells it and writes one of their own. Ends in a Showcase: a story, told live.

Term 2 · Explaining

Explaining clearly: true stories and real topics, explained in their own words. Ends in a Showcase: an explainer, presented.

Term 3 · Persuading (Arguing in Grades 6–8)

Making a case: an opinion with reasons in Grades 2–5, and a full argument that answers the other side in Grades 6–8. Ends in a Showcase: a case, argued.

FAQs

Questions About Vocabulary Classes

What will my child learn across the year?

The year runs in three terms: Term 1 Storytelling, Term 2 Explaining and Term 3 Persuading (Arguing in Grades 6–8). Each term ends in a Showcase your child writes and performs in your presence. Each term also has a mid-term and an end-of-term assessment, each with a detailed report. Each level is harder than the last, and the difficulty climbs term by term and grade by grade.

What does a class look like?

Live, online and one-on-one with the same coach all term. Your child picks the stories they want to do in each class, then listens, reads, learns words in context, speaks and writes about them.

How will I see progress?

After every class, the coach sends a class summary in the Cueword Parent app. You also meet the coach twice a term, and get a report after each mid-term and end-of-term assessment, which check listening comprehension, reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Is this homework help or exam prep?

Neither. Cueword is a communication program, built around stories your child picks. It builds how your child listens, reads, speaks and writes, which shows up everywhere.

How many kids are in a class?

Just your child. Every class is one-on-one with the coach, including the Showcase at the end of each term. Not a small group that's called 1:1.

What if my child has gaps from earlier grades?

That's common. If the evaluation or coach spots a gap, the coach fills it with foundation lessons within your 26 classes a term, with no extra classes to book.

What is the Cueword evaluation?

A free, 50-minute, one-on-one session with a Cueword specialist. It's a dialogue, not a test. It covers all five skills (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, public speaking, creative writing and vocabulary), and you get a Cueword Report the same day.
